~How Environment Interacts and Relates With Self~
I am figuring to re-post some entries from previous blog iterations, as this has been posted before, but I have since taken down. Hope you may enjoy :).
----------------
It is interesting how how we exist in relationship with our environment. In one aspect we are a separate entity and we interact with elements in our environment in a mutual relationship. In another aspect, we can be seen as one with our environment and cannot be interpreted as a separate entity by ourselves. In either case though, we can look at how our relationship with environment relates with self in a mutual relationship, I think, with a little bit of thought.
I think it is very interesting to think of our immediate personal environment, that we have the most ‘personal’ influence over. Like the closest relationship with. Our home or where ever we spend the most time at.
I think our external environment can be looked at as a reflection of our inner world. For example, if our inner mind is well organized and peaceful, than likely, our bedroom is probably tidy and well kept. This is a simple example of what I am going at here.
On the flipside, our inner world would also reflect our external environment to a degree, such that if we visit somewhere, say, we go camping, our mind’s would be a bit more tuned in with nature, as its in that environment.
So it’s a mutual relationship that goes either way, between self and environment. I think it goes a bit further though. And I think it may be useful to delve a little deeper, so let’s.
Let’s say you would like a simpler home with less clutter. Maybe you could try adopting a habit, of meditating 10 minutes every morning. Or a weekly trip to a museum or an art gallery, somewhere with open and organized/simple spaces. This would be ways to adjust your inner spaces, (also utilizing environment), to influence your habits at home, to adjust your handling of your possessions and tidying habits at home.
You can take this further still. Let’s say you want to save money for a vacation/trip. Let’s say to the Bahamas just for example. You could add elements to your environment to influence your inner/habits to influence your behavior to help you reach such a goal. You could leave a ‘vacation shoebox’ somewhere hidden on a bookshelf for loose money (bills/change) as well as brochures or magazines of islands and beach pictures on a coffee table or end table, etc.. This would be a way to influence your mind towards your goal as well as keeping you motivated and on task of saving towards your vacation.
So that’s actually some examples to adjust elements of your environment to consciously influence your subconscious. This is surely a powerful ability, and I think there is validity to such thinking.
You can also take away elements, which I’ve actually come across before, such as removing items that may be ‘triggers’ for bad habits that you would like to remove from your life. That is the same thinking. Like to quit smoking cigs, removing lighters and ash trays. Things like that.
But thus far, I’ve only been speaking in terms of physical things. I believe this can also be transposed to other realms. Such as the social sphere. For social or professional aims. I don’t have as many social skills to speak much on this area, per se. So I may leave that to your interpretation :P.
But as well, the area of thoughts. You can definitely use this in the area of logic and thoughts. Such that some people would use mantras in things like meditation. Or prayers. You can add/remove thoughts to/from your environment to adjust your inner/outer world, much like in the realm of ‘things,’ like I began this discussion on. This would be a great way to develop thoughts and strategies. Powerful. I’m glad I thought of that :D.
Well, I’m gonna leave off on this thinking with a thought now:
“Sharing is caring.”
